Popis: While the relationship between feminism and ethnography has mostly been examined through discussions of ethics and politics during fieldwork, this article focuses on how the ethnographer’s feminism can affect her observations and analyses. Many feminist ethnographers narrate how at some point of their research they have more or less explicitly framed who and what they saw using a political grid (“are they feminists?”). I analyze the consequences of such questioning on ethnographical observations in the case of a research on gender in French Judaism, looking at how it can be used in a reflexive way. Indeed, the feminist ethnographer is rarely the only one to look at gender on the field, and local ways of looking at and talking about gender do influence and shape her own perceptions of gender. Feminist ways of seeing gender can be situated within other forms of reflexivity on gender; de-centering the ethnographer’s vision can thus help explore how local perceptions of gender are socially constructed.
