The goal of the research. The article aims to search and analysis of potential and latent mentions of tears and sadness in the text of the Kyivan Cave Patericon. Methodology. The research uses methods of analysis, synthesis and generalization, classification and systematization, induction and deduction, textual analysis, comparative, content analysis and interpretive methods. Scientific novelty. In the study, for the first time, an attempt was made to findand analyze potential and latent references to tears and sadness in the text of the Kyivan Cave Patericon. Conclusions. As a result of the search for possible and indirect mentions of tears and sadness, over 100 potential and latent reportsof the named emotions were found. Possible (un)joyful emotions (about 79) are suggested based on existing messages about sadness and crying. Most of them belong to such circumstances as prayer, repentance and petition; less - instruction, parental worries for children, common misfortunes, a threat to the salvation of a neighbor, obstacles on the path pleasing to God, death, a meeting, joyful emotion. Non-verbalized directly crying and sorrow (about 24) was reconstructed on the basis of reports of unhappy emotions, which are present next to each other in the text; messages about consolation, about the impossibility of enduring certain situations, about aggravating circumstances, as well as about joy, about calmness or cheerfulness, which in those cases are something exceptional, such that it even causes surprise. These (un)joyful emotions relate to the difficulties of the monastic feat (there are especially many of them), one’s own sins and those of others (threats to salvation due toleaving the monastery), obstacles on the God-pleasing path, threats to the life/well-being of children, personal misfortunes, lack of material goods, threats to honor. We believe that the absence of mentions of unhappy emotions couldbe connected with the fact that the Pechersk community was characterized by moderate emotionality, which is reflected in the text. The idea that griefin individual cases (difficulties of monastic labor) was hushed up, that the authors avoided such news, seems unlikely to us, because all the same, these difficulties of spiritual struggle and spiritual work on oneself are reported. The prospects of the research are the study in the suggested key of other sources representing the Pechersk tradition, as well as original monuments of the Eastern European Middle Ages. |
