The purpose of this study is to show how photovoice can be used as a continuous improvement approach for increasing quality assurance in aviation flight programs. Previous research initiatives have made positive impacts on aviation programs, however, two major gaps exist. First, the studies have not yet applied the photovoice approach, which uses pictures and narratives to gain deeper insights into challenges and barriers associated with current aviation programs. Second, previous studies were primarily dependent upon industry (e.g., pilots, managers, training organizations, and advisory boards) to address the need for educational curriculum changes instead of collaborating and including perspectives of the customers (e.g., students) themselves to evaluate the learning experience concerning recruitment, persistence, and completion. This study provides a pathway to address these gaps by conducting a photovoice assessment with senior-level aviation students completing their final semester of the certified flight program. Student participants were instructed to answer questions (related to program challenges and motivations) with two pictures and a description for each. The study used thematic analysis for discovering patterns within the data. The results from this work provide insight into challenges and motivators associated with the holistic student learning experience. |
