Popis: This paper presents an analysis of the discourse of Brazilian teachers and future teachers of English as a foreign language in Brazil centred around their representations of the English language. The subjects' discourse is analysed from the perspective of its relationship with colonial discourse and its multiple echoes in present discourse domains. The aim of the analysis is to reveal with which positions the subjects identify within the colonialist matrix and thus better understand the specificity of Brazilian teachers of English as subjects of discourse. The results show that these subjects are positioned between several conflicting and even contradictory discourse, viz the glorification of the English language versus a nationalist discourse, the passion for English in contrast with a discourse of negation and inferiority. This reveals a unique discursive place for the Brazilian teacher of English as a foreign language: imposed discourses are resignified or dislocated by the contradictions, thus forming what is claimed to be border identities constituted within their particular local histories.
