Popis: The geomorphological functioning of the meandering section of the Benue in Cameroon is poorly known. This article aims to fill this knowledge gap by characterising the morphological changes of this system. These changes were analysed using a GIS, by diachronic monitoring of a meandering section (70 km) of the lower course of the river from satellite images acquired between 1985 and 2018. Morphological transformations were characterized and quantified through indicators describing the morphometry, morphology and morphodynamics of meanders. The results obtained highlighted the low in-plane mobility of the meanders associated with a modest morphodynamic activity. The morphometric parameters have changed slightly, but the morphodynamic evolution shows two periods of intense activity (1985-1990 and 2003-2018) dominated by erosion and deposition processes. These morphological adjustments describe laterally constrained meanders. The lateral locking of the sinuosity of these meanders is exerted by a narrow-incised valley in which the meanders evolve. The bed mobility represents the intrinsic ability of meanders to erode the alluvial valley within which they develop. An indication of the relationship between changes in liquid flows and morphological changes is also provided.
