Points of view on sustaining the environment have now reached such a level that the process has become an unavoidable topic. The whole concept linking the economy, the environment and life in general, is now proving especially relevant to ski resorts. Such resorts whilst being the subject of socio-economic consideration are also catalysts for environmental protection, as befits the rich ecological interest to be found in the mountains. Nevertheless these economical and environmental interests are proving to be quite diverse and particularly sensitive in accounting terms, despite some strict regulation controls being applied. Thus, the first phase is to try and identify the key influences at work, their logical inter-play and the resulting conflicts. Analysis of this fairly complicated set-up requires a dynamic approach, which is at the heart of the second phase. Here we revert back to a negotiation process concerning an environmental issue and its consequences in terms of nature and intensity of the proximities between class agents. The challenge for the future is to follow these new inter-linked proximities and discern whether they lead to true environmental governance in the tourist areas concerned such as the resorts. |
