Above all, a writer’s home is a place of memory, a place of conservation and preservation as well as a place of promotion of literary heritage that can highlight a territory’s image, reinforce territorial identity and develop cultural tourism. Those writers’ houses give rise to many questions about the way they interact with their surrounding space, as well as about constantly evolving tourism practices. This article’s objective is to discover whether a writer’s home can be considered a gateway between the tourist and the territory, particularly in rural settings.A statistical inquiry in France allows for the classification of a writer’s home and tourism using a typology of four profiles. Then, qualitative observations of complementary elements in specific case studies indicate that writers’ homes provide access to the territories they are set in, according to multiple modalities, though limited by the practices of the tourists themselves. |
