Salt Tolerance of Graminaceous Turfgrass: Paspalum notatum Flüggé. The main objective of this study is to determine turfgrass "Paspalum notatum" response to salinity. Cuttings of turfgrass were irrigated with water using different concentrations of NaCl. The effect of salinity was assessed on capacity of rooting, chlorophyllian fluorescence and antioxidant enzymes activities such as; catalases (CAT) and the ascorbate dismutase (APX). Results indicated that root and foliar biomass decreased significantly when NaCl concentration exceeded 8 g/l. This reduction of biomass is attributed to an alteration of the integrity of photosystem II. Moreover, H2O2 content was found to be positively associated with increased NaCl concentrations. When NaCl is below the critical threshold of 8 g/l, the CAT and APX activities are more pronounced and inhibiting H2O2 content within the tissue. |
