Abbeville Town Hall was destroyed on 20 May 1940 by German aviation. From 1943 to 1957, several reconstruction projects were put forward by architects and city planners including Jacques and Pierre Gréber and Clément Tambuté. The new building (whose paternity remains complex) is an office building connected by a gallery to a contemporary belfry, the symbol of the historical continuity of communal power. The building was inaugurated in October 1960 by Max Lejeune, who was then mayor of Abbeville and an important local political figure during the post-war boom years. This event was also the opportunity to celebrate the rebirth of a martyred city. |
