Popis: | Introductory thoughts on the relationship between research and cultural heritage managment in Norway. This article is an introduction to four polemic papers about research and cultural heritage management in Norwegian archaeology. Archaeology in Norway can be described as a field with two poles, inspired by the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The first pole is defined by economical power, the second by scientific or symbolic power. Cultural heritage management is situated close to the economic pole of the archaeological field. Economic power is generally considered as a more effect-full and influential type of power. The noticeable situation in archaeology, however, is that symbolic power still defines the whole system and thus overrides the force of economy. Archaeological heritage management in Norway has not developed into a more or less independent branch of the discipline. The raison d’être of this practice refers back to research and university archaeology. Consequently, of this reason university archaeology has been preserved as a museal practice, where research is dependent on large and expanding archaeological collections. The challenge for the future is to consciously trim this delicate relation between research and management. Heritage bureaucrats and politicians have cunningly created a clear cut division between research and management, with complementary roles. This way knowledge oriented and relatively dynamic archaeological heritage management has been created. Hopefully this political line will be followed also in future reforms and adjustments of the heritage field. |
