Summary: Many diseases that affect the liver can be treated by natural products derived from plants. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of Senna alexandrina leaf powder supplementation on oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, and hepatic damage in Swiss albino mice induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Plasma levels of ALP, ALT and AST were increased in Swiss albino mice after CCl4 administration compared to controls, but Senna alexandrina leaf powder supplementation significantly decreased these activities. In addition, CCl4-treated Swiss albino mice showed elevated levels of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation which were reduced significantly by Senna alexandrina leaf powder supplementation. Notably, this powder supplement was able to alleviate CCL4 induced hepatic cell infiltration and collagen and iron deposition as evident from the liver histology of the CCL4-treated mice suggesting its potential hepatoprotective function. These findings point to Senna alexandrina leaf powder supplementation potential for protecting the liver from CCl4-induced damage by reducing oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, fibrosis, and weakened cellular antioxidant defense. |
