The artillery of the Portuguese galleon, Santissimo Sacramento, has played an important part in the study of early modern gunfounding, in particular through the researches of John Guilmartin who has revisited this collection of cannons, updating the interpretation in the light of new discoveries. However this work has concentrated on the ballistics and technological aspects of the guns rather than in their historic importance. In the course of research into Elizabethan gun supply, the author located a number of records which throw light on the six of the cannons from the vessel. The Santissimo Sacramento was a 60-gun galleon, the flagship of the Company of Brazil, who sank during a storm near Bahia in May 1668 coming from Portugal to Brazil. The wreck was discovered in the 1970s and then investigated by an archaeological team under the auspices of the Brazilian Navy. |
