Popis: | The author analyzes different ways of performance recording employed in the 20th century. The article focuses on the notation system that was worked out in the Research Laboratory of the Meyerhold State Theatre by Vs. Meyerhold and L. Varpakhovsky in the mid-1930s. The author analyzes the role of Varpakhovsky’s attempts in the context of the European and Russian notation tradition. This system is considered in comparison with other notation systems. A considerable part of the article is devoted to Varpakhovsky’s methods as part of the developing European and Russian system of theatrical, ballet and opera performances recording. Except for Varpakhovsky’s system, where he presents general patterns for the recoding of a performance, the author examines some extant parts of an audio recording of 33 Swoons, a play of the Theatre, made by the Research Laboratory. Additionally, the author considers the existing notations by L. Varpakhovsky as possible reconstructions of the productions of the State Meyerhold Theatre. She concludes that Varpakhovsky makes use of all the achievements of theatrical notation and puts forward his own understanding of the necessity and importance of theatre performances recording. |
