The article presents an analysis of the situation of European Social Democracy in the party-political system of Europe in recent years. It is shown, based on the study of the results that the social democratic and socialist parties in Europe have achieved in recent years in national and European elections that their electoral potential was steadily declining. The author pointed to the main reasons for this phenomenon, which are associated with the change of the social base of these parties, which in these years has been steadily declining due to the reduction of the share of traditional workers in the total labor force in Europe. This led to a significant weakening of the role and influence of the trade unions, which have traditionally been the patrons of the Social Democrats. The article also notes that the Social Democrats have recently suffered losses in the cultural and ideological sphere, failing to respond in a timely manner to the change in public sentiment, especially after the recent global financial and the migration crisises. Nevertheless, this is not the first severe crisis that European social democracy is experiencing, and the history of this political movement shows that so far it has managed to overcome all previous crises in the XIX and XX centuries. Moreover, the successes of a number of European social democratic parties in the 2019 elections (Denmark, Spain, Portugal) show that hopes remain that this time the European social democracy will retain its position as one of the leading political forces in Europe. |
