Waiting is still a peripheral theme in the repertoire of social sciences. Recently, however, it has aroused the interest of some researchers, especially in disciplines more sensitive to the so called mobility turn. Empirical construction of the phenomenon has emphasized the situations in which it appears relatively confined or in isolated form (as the platforms of different modes of transportation or refugee camps). However, when examined from the perspective of spatial and temporal organization of daily life, waiting produces more diffuse forms of occupation, which deserve to be better described and analyzed. In large cities, public spaces are privileged observation situations, as different modalities of waiting are co-present, associated with the dynamics of movement, work and social gathering. Also in these spaces, those who wait are particularly available for observing the public scene. |
