Popis: Abstract The use of fossil fuels to meet humanity's energy needs is causing serious environmental damage. According to several scientists, the net greenhouse gas emissions must be zero by 2050 to avoid irreversible effects. Hydrogen fuel cells are devices that directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy; its efficiency is above that of internal combustion engines, steam, and gas turbines. In this article, the research question – What is the potential of hydrogen fuel cells to mitigate climate change consequences? – is addressed with a focus on the circular economy, applications of fuel cells in transportation and in obtaining water for localities that suffer water stress. Finally, it is concluded that to achieve the sustainable development objectives, a combined use of renewable energies is fundamental, with hydrogen being a protagonist of the energy transition at the global level.
