Popis: | Rationale Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with multiple comorbidities, leading to an increase in the social and economic burden. Anxiety and depression are usually diagnosed in patients with COPD, with marked impact on COPD management. Aim This work aims to assess the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and mental disorders in patients diagnosed with COPD. Design This is a case–control study. Patients and methods The present study included 300 candidates functionally diagnosed as having COPD according to GOLD 2017. Candidates had to pass through the following (and they are): medical history, clinical assessment, spirometry before bronchodilator and after bronchodilator inhalation, and questionnaires − the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results The study included 300 COPD patients. The patients were comprised of ninety-eight percent male individuals, and all were above 40 years of age. All the patients were current smokers. The patients were categorized into mild, moderate, and severe groups according to the GOLD 2017 classification. The study stated that the levels of anxiety and depression in HADS score, and mental score in CCQ were inversely proportionate to post-forced expiratory volume in 1 s, and directly proportionate to severity of COPD, and the correlations were of statistical significance. This study also found that the levels of anxiety and depression in HADS score and CCQ mental score are directly proportionate to smoking index in all study candidates, and the correlations were of statistical significance. Conclusion Current research has proved the importance of taking the psychosocial burden of COPD into consideration while managing patients with COPD. |
