Autocorrelation coefficients of specific humidity are influenced by correlation of this parameter with temperature. Much of this correlation is attributable to the fact that the range of possible values widens with increasing temperature. It is argued that a partial correlation coefficient should be used where the correlation between humidity and temperature is eliminated at one of the two points coupled in the correlation computation. It is not uncommon that such a correction results in a decrease by 0.1 for correlation coefficients incorporating values from a couple of consecutive months. General neglection of an effect of such a magnitude seems not justifiable. It is also pointed to an alternative measure of spatial variability which for some applications allows to evade the complications faced for the correlation coefficient. |
