Abstract Background The apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE −/− ) mouse is a well-established model for studying atherosclerosis. However, its small size limits its use in longitudinal positron emission tomography (PET) imaging studies. Recently, the apoE −/− rat has emerged as an alternative.
