The article analyzes the phenomenon of the emergence and development of a new pan-European political party of European conservatives and reformists (PECR) in the political arena of Europe. Its forerunner was the European democratic group in the European Parliament, initiated by the British and Danish conservatives in 1979, which lasted until 1992.Then this group was part of the European people’s party (EPP) faction in the European Parliament for almost 17 years. In 2009 at the initiative of the British conservatives, supported by their colleagues from the Czech Republic and 6 other EU member States, a new party was created ‒ the Alliance of European conservatives and reformists, which became essentially an opponent of the EPP in the conservative segment of the European political spectrum. European conservatives and reformists today represent a fairly influential political force in the European Union, which is distinguished from the EPP by a combination of conservative values and a moderately skeptical view of the current state of Affairs in the EU and its further development prospects, if the EU political system is not significantly trans- formed towards its greater transparency and democracy. The author of the article tried to identify the reasons for the emergence of this kind of political force and predict its future prospects. |
