Popis: With the beginning of the great Patriotic war, the implementation of the strategic plan of the German high command for the destruction of the USSR, known as the "Barbarossa Plan" or Directive No. 21 of December 18, 1940, began. One of the most important tasks set for the Wehrmacht was to inflict a crushing defeat of the Red Army and capture Moscow. The enemy hoped for an easy victory, believing that after the border battles, the Soviet troops would be demoralized and lose the ability to resist. However, despite the numerical superiority in manpower and equipment, the German army failed to approach the capital of the Soviet Union at the first attempt. In this study, based on a large number of unpublished documents, the participation of units of the 57th brigade of internal troops of the NKVD in the Yelets offensive, which became an integral part of the battle of Moscow, is analyzed and shown. The authors concluded that despite the fact that the brigade was significantly inferior to other parts of the Red Army in terms of its staff and combat capabilities, its soldiers not only made a significant contribution to the defeat of the enemy group at Yelets, but also captured valuable German documents as trophies that shed light on the feat of the defenders of the Brest fortress. Participation in the operation of the 57th brigade, in difficult winter conditions, contributed to the disruption of the enemy's offensive and almost complete destruction of a large group of the Wehrmacht.
