This essay explores the lesser-discussed aspect of Rosario Castellanos’ work: her essayistic production, focusing on her 1973 collection Mujer que sabe latín…. Through an analysis of the literary canon of mid-20th century Mexico, the essay highlights how Castellanos, from within the canon, expanded its boundaries by addressing themes such as the role of women in culture, the work of foreign women writers, and the inclusion of popular literary genres.
