Objective: To identify the challenges and proposed solutions for researchers dealing with participants’ death during data collection in the older adult population; and to describe what is known about researchers’ strategies to deal with the death of older adult participants when conducting data collection. Methods: Searches were performed using CINAHL, Scopus, PubMed on Ebscohost, and PsycINFO databases from inception to November 2022. A total of 4158 articles were identified by the online search with the data screened independently by two reviewers. Results: Three articles were analysed with a total of 69 researchers from Australia, Belgium, and USA. The main challenges were identified as emotional burden, trespassing the boundaries of ethical responsibility, and lack of skills and training. Whilst the main proposed solutions were researcher-participant relationship, self-care, and skills and training. Conclusion: Researchers are affected personally and professionally by the experience of death when dealing with older adult participants. This review fills a serious gap in the literature on the challenges and proposed solutions for researchers when dealing with death during data collection with older adults. This review may serve as a reference guide to help researchers when dealing with death whilst collecting data in the older adult population. |
