Popis: The aim of the paper is to identify culturally conditioning ways of receiving and transmitting information through silence in the process of institutional communication. The relevance of the research is raised by the necessity of further investigation of peculiarities of decoding cultural information transmitted by non-verbal means of communication. The methods of linguistic analysis include the pragmatic, contextual, discursive analysis, as well as lexico-semantic one. The research results are as follows: the linguocultural interpretation of the sign silence suggests that in typical institutional situations, on the one hand, silence correlates with such dominants as the principles of politeness and strict regulation of communication. On the other hand, in the framework of conventional communication silence acts as an ambivalent sign correlating with the evaluative dominant of distance, otherwise, silence bears a confrontational potential. Practical implications. The results of the work can be used in teaching communication theory and special courses in linguoculture.
