Popis: New space has been used to name the transformations in the global space sector, mainly related to the attraction of private companies to various value chains of this industry. These changes would involve a paradigm shift, given that space has traditionally been dominated by states. In the Cold War, being at forefront of space race represented the dominance of frontier technological advances, which was not only loaded with strategic symbolism but also as a fundamental part of the development model. Currently, we would be facing the loss of State protagonism in space sector, from the growing presence of private actors emerging from Silicon Valley. However, in this work, the hypothesis is considered that the centrality of State in space sector remains active and that the emergence of new space itself is related to this action. In addition to a bibliographic and documentary research, focused on concepts such as structural monetary power and monetary instability, databases were consulted to observe variables related to the venture capital market and the results of space startups, as well as the growth rate of the global space economy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (Nasa’s) budget. The data points to two elements that contributed on the rise of new space: performance of the United States government in the post-2008 crisis period, leading to a reduction in interest rates and a change in direction of investments from banking sector to the venture capital and, above all, the use of the United States monetary power to carry out billion-dollar contracts in the private space sector.
