Popis: | The aim of this study is to examine the image schemas in scientific texts within the framework of cognitive linguistics. According to cognitive linguists, the importance of image schemas, as a part of language and thought, is that they, in terms of rudimentary embodied concepts, systematically provide the fundamental building blocks for more complex concepts. That makes their study inevitable in many fields. In this study, we examined Johnson’s basic image schemas (i.e. force, path, and containment) in scientific texts. We used qualitative, descriptive, and inferential methods in our examination. The results show that despite the significant difference (p< 0/001) between their usage, all these three image schemata are used in the science texts and the rate of their occurrence, from more to less, is containment (% 56), path (%29) and force (%15) image schemata respectively. There is a difference between the rate of non-image schematic (%84) and image schematic sentences (%16), with significant difference of p< 0/01. |
