This study investigates conversation regarding experiences involving emotions in middle class families with pre-adolescents (10 to 13 years old). One of the parents and the pre-adolescent answered a questionnaire on family communication. The results show parents as commonly sharing their own experiences, favoring problem solutions when talking about their children’s negative experiences, and reinforcing the pre-adolescent’s self-esteem while sharing positive experiences. As to the pre-adolescents, they most usually sharing their own experiences at home, and age but not gender influence this habit; the positive emotions lead them to talk more than the negative; and the partner choice for talking is influenced by the emotion involved in the experience and by the preadolescent’s age and gender. |
