In 1914, while going through a deep existential and creative crisis, Valerii Briusov published his own Autobiography. In fifteen pages the poet tells us about his childhood and education. Briusov’s episodes cover a 40-year time span, from 1873 (his date of birth) till 1912-1913, the years when he started writing his autobiography. Briusov’s Autobiography seems to step out of the proper so-called ‘autobiography’ as defined by Lejeune. In fact, in Briusov’s Autobiography the author/narrator and character are two distinct entities, which are connected but at the same time separated. |
