During July of 2003 the University of Western Australia hosted an interdisciplinary symposium entitled ‘Water: histories, cultures, ecologies’. The convenors, Drs Andrea Gaynor and Pam Sharpe from History, Dr Sandy Touissaint from Anthropology and Professor Jorg Imberger and Ms Caroline Wood from the Centre for Water Research, promoted the symposium as an opportunity to ‘explore past and present understandings, uses and managements of water; to formulate an action plan for Western Australia’s water future; and to open this discussion to a wider audience of concerned citizens.’ The symposium brief was summarised by the brand ‘Making Knowledges Visible’, and while the intention of an interdisciplinary cross–fertilization of ideas was not directly stated it can be assumed that this was, at least in part, the objective of an increased understanding of water issues. |
