Popis: | The importance of guidebooks for understanding the phenomenon of tourism has been well-understood since the appearance in 1967 of number 10 of the periodical Communications, dedicated to tourism. This article first reviews what research has shown us about the phenomenon. The second half of the article is devoted to Switzerland, chosen as a case study because, if tourism is by definition inter-cultural, tri-lingual Switzerland is, within its own borders, multi-cultural. An analysis of eleven guidebooks on Switzerland in Italian, French, German, and English, confirms three hypotheses: the guidebooks have a tendency, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to favor the regions of the country that are linguistically the same as the language in which the guidebook is written; the guides’ authors are not culturally neutral, their own cultural predispositions can be read between the lines; regardless of the cultural origins of the guide, stereotypes and clichés are present in all. |
