Popis: | Purpose. The paper deals with the lexical and grammatical analysis of numeral in Arabic (the Afroasiatic language family). The cardinal, ordinal and fractional numerals are under investigation. Numerals, expressing the exact number, are considered in the structure of quantity as a category of the certain quantity. Arabic numerals function as nouns, adjectives, pronouns or adverbs according to their grammatical characteristics. Methodology. The study is based on the theoretical methods of data analysis. Results. Contradictions between writing numerals in numbers and words were revealed: the reversed word order of units from 11 to 19 and from 21 to 99. The hidden categorization of numbers by classes in the form of a class of “small number” was revealed. The morphological indicators of quantitativeness in the form of the dual endings for the cardinal and fractional numerals, and the plural endings for the cardinal numerals were singled out. The ordinal numbers are neutral in terms of grammatical number. Practical implications. The research results can be applied in the further study of the category of quantity. |
