Recent studies have confirmed that the spread in Western Sicily of tiled vaults (realine) took extensively place from the second half of the XVIII century to the first decades of the XX century, both for floorings and staircases in the basic building and with a load-bearing or ceiling function in the noble architecture. The constructive characters have been analyzed for study or professional finalities, likewise the constants and variables, with checks on that unscathed structures during the time. Academic experiments and recovery interventions were performed, in laboratory or in the restoration yards, with partial or total reconstruction and “static improvements”; the encouraging results of the load tests on the intact vaults and on example-vaults, built on site or in the laboratory, support the choice of re-construction and demonstrate how the instruction of workers to the competence of obsolete techniques involves a limited financial and temporal commitment, taking a quality of the intervention and the respect of history: the constructive knowledge instils confidence in the performance of tiled vaults. |
