This article is an attempt at a biographical reconstruction of three emblematic characters of the Brussels theatrical scene: Jean-Nicolas Servandoni, known as D’Hannetaire, secret son of the architect Servandoni, who was director of the Théâtre de la Monnaie, and his daughters Eugénie and Angélique, who performed in Brussels and Paris. Using archival documents, mostly unpublished, we follow the lives of these three artists in France and the Austrian Netherlands. The private and public aspects are evoked, as well as the links that unite the family to the Brussels aristocracy, in particular the Prince de Ligne, Charles-Alexandre de Lorraine and Vicomte Desandrouins. Gazettes and other contemporary works deliver their assessments, sometimes laudatory and sometimes acerbic, on their acting and their respective lifestyles. Outstanding figures in Brussels life, D’Hannetaire and his daughters left their lasting imprints on the history of the theatre. |
