Purpose: In this study, we aimed to determine the care burden of the caregivers of the patients with schizophrenia taking services of Community Mental Health Center (CHMC) and to compare the results to the caregivers of the patients with schizophrenia who don’t take services of CHMC. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five patients with schizophrenia taking services of CMHC for at least 6 months and 35 patients with schizophrenia who don’t take services of CHMC. In addition, a relative (mother, father, sibling, etc.) who take care of these patients were included in the study. Sociodemographic information form was filled in for each individual and all caregivers were allowed to fill in the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI). Results: The total ZBI mean score of the caregivers of CHMC patients was 44.97 ± 10.24 and the total ZBI mean score of caregivers of outpatients was 52.33±14.67. There were statistically significant differences in psychological distress and deterioration of personal life, limitedness and irritability, and deterioration in social relations. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the increasing the number and functionality of CMHCs may be effective in reducing the care burden of individuals who take the responsibility for care of the patients with schizophrenia at home. These findings may guide the CHMC team that the caregiver should be involved in the follow-up and treatment process, and should be supported for the care of the patient. |
