Status-quo and solutions for enhacing farmers engaging in rice-production linkage with enterprises in Hau Giang Province

| Popis: | This study aimed to investigate why a large number of farmers are not likely to engage in rice production linkage systems with enterprises. The study also examined differences in household characteristics and farm performances between participants and non-participants in the linkages. Primary data were collected from 180 rice households in Hau Giang Province. A qualitative method was mainly employed in the study. Results showed that the household characteristics of participants and non-participants in the linkages were likely similar. Yet rice-farm performances of the participants were remarkably better than those of non-participants. We explored that farmers have not been willing to participate in the linkages since they are accustomed to conventional ways of cultivation and marketing and seem not to be dependent on enterprises during the production process. Additionally, enterprises have not given instant payment to the farmers after collecting rice, which is considered a major cause that farmers refuse to join the linkages in rice production. |
