The article discusses the Italian merchant environment and gender stereotypes of behavior in the late Middle Ages. On the basis of the research the author comes to the conclusion that among the ruling elite of Italian cities specific sets developed, which formed the basis of modern European gender behavior: the origin of women was taken into consideration in marriage, it contributed a lot to strengthening the status of men. As there was stabilization of the Institute of Church marriage there emerged significant figures of women-housewives and manageresses of family affairs. |
