Periurban areas were previously often regarded as a part of urban housing markets. At the beginning of the process, households moving towards rurban belts did not consider the importance of open spaces between residential areas. It seems that a“rural turn” occurred since the nineties: when choosing periurban locations, households take more often into account resources and amenities of the countryside such as landscape or ancient style houses. This enhancement of rural places should be related to the evolution of the social and geographical origins of their inhabitants. Both census data outlining major changes during the last decades, and qualitative surveys conducted on households, highlight the recent trends in the western part of Parisian Region. |
