Popis: | The first Syriac text with a grammatical content is a translation of the Technē grammatikē of (Pseudo) Dionysius Thrax, attributed by part of the tradition to the East-Syriac grammarian Huzaya (6th cent.). While this text goes some way towards defining the Syriac grammatical terminology that would be used by grammarians over the centuries, it nevertheless presents several idiosyncrasies that set it apart from the rest of the Syriac linguistic tradition. This article surveys and examines the numerous quotations from the Syriac Technē found in the Lexicon by the East-Syriac scholar Bar Bahlūl (10th cent.), attempting to reconstruct the history of the reception of this text by the later Syriac grammatical tradition, as well as the process of creation of the terminology relating to the parts of speech. Moreover, it aims to contribute to an understanding of the way in which the many terms and concepts of Greek origin were integrated into a more complex metalinguistic system, encompassing both logic and grammar, and now opening up to Arabic linguistic reflection. |
