Electrochemical properties and corrosion induced mechanical degradation of biomedical Zn–Cu–Li alloy in simulated body fluid

Popis: The electrochemical behavior and corrosion induced mechanical degradation of biodegradable Zn–2Cu–0.03Li alloy were in detail investigated. The results indicated that the corrosion product film presented an increasing corrosion resistance, while the localized corrosion induced by microgalvanic effect was intensified. Corrosion pits, as the typical defect, acted as the crack initiation sites and accelerated the fracture process of the Zn–2Cu–0.03Li alloy. Accordingly, the fracture mode transformed from ductile to brittle failure. Significant loss in ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the alloys occurred due to strong stress concentration at corrosion pit, threatening the mechanical reliability after implantation.
