Popis: The article is devoted to the topic of someone else’s speech, which remains relevant in modern linguistics. The author studies the way uttered (external) free indirect speech (FIS) (namely, its structural and semantic types) functions in Marina Tsvetaeva’s prosaic texts. Through uttered free indirect speech, the writer renders persona’s direct speech, which may be occasionally marked by quotes or by colons. On the basis of the structural-semantic classification proposed by the Ukrainian linguist E.Y. Kus’ko, the author of the article describes the specific features of various types of uttered free indirect speech: thematic speech, hidden speech, speech in the speech, collective speech, citation speech. The latter is employed more frequently in the outstanding Russian poet’s prose. At the same time, M.I. Tsvetaeva resorts to uttered free indirect speech rather rarely, which is connected with the peculiarity of the poet’s individual style. The purpose of the work is to describe how free indirect speech functions in the text field, identify the implementation mechanisms and markers of the described types of uttered free indirect speech in prose texts of the Russian poet. Methodology. The research has been conducted using the method of continuous sampling of the illustrative material, the method of narratologic analysis, the method of semantic structuring of the literary text and the method of stylistic interpretation. Results. The author comes to the conclusion, that in her prosaic texts, M.I. Tsvetaeva resorts to three varieties of uttered FIS, namely citation speech, rarely speech in speech and collective speech. Tsvetaeva employs word-for-word quoting of literary characters’ speech (in the form of separate words or expressions); and word-for-word or modified quoting of famous people’s speech. Practical implications. The results of the research can be applied by students of philological departments while taking such courses as stylistics and syntax of the Russian language.
