Popis: Critics such as Antoine Compagnon or William Marx sustain that arrière-garde writers are not passive conservatives who stand against “the new” as the only and true active category of modernity, but that they rather participate in the same field of symbolic struggles of the avant-gardes. These critical discourses, based on the corpus of European modernism, cannot be automatically translated to Latin America. In fact, one of the crucial aspects of the arrière-gardes -the reference to a previous tradition- will receive in the Argentine context a response that implies another paradox: a literary nationalism based on translation and importation, as can be studied in the far right journal La Nueva República. To analyse this relation between nationalism, foreign languages and literature we would like to propose the concept of “peripheral anti-modernism”.
