Popis: | The article describes the evolution of the theme of barbarism in Latin American literature from the Spanish conquest of the New World to the turn of the XIX th – XX th centuries when the theme reached its culmination. Latin American culture due to the nature of its origins embraced all the meanings of the notion «barbarian» and first of all the semantics of «wildness» associated with the image of an Indian and thus had a direct relation to the problem of the perception of «the other». The theme of barbarism including the opposition barbarism / civilization arose at the dawn of Spanish American culture when a broad public debate about the Indians started, and when the conquistadors elaborated models of the relationship with the «other», that were reflected in their reports and chronicles. In the middle of the XIXth century, after the collapse of Bolivar’s utopian project, the theme of barbarism comes to the fore: it is involved in the current literary trends and in the formation of new trends of Spanish American literature. That’s why the plots of a broad range of literary works came back to the theme of barbarism. The article observes the modifications of the image of a barbarian in romantic literature, in the emerging Realism, which incorporates the sociological concepts of Latin American positivists, and in Spanish American Modernism. Despite different interpretations from negative to apologetic, in all literary trends the theme of barbarism is associated with the true identity of the Hispanic world and of the American space. In Latin American literature the image of a barbarian becomes the basic model of cultural identity and thus serves as one of the main elements of the artistic code. |
