Throughout the eighteenth century occurred in the Canary Islands serious monetary problems because of the currency in circulation in the archipelago, resulting from both counterfeiting and the maintenance in circulation of coins minted in previous centuries. Also, the lack of cash often favored the entry of provincial currency fleece from Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico. After several attempts to stabilize the currency and the use of counterseals, finally, in a secret operation in its early stages, the current was replaced by newly minted coins and old currency in circulation was issued to Seville to be re-minted. |
