In this study, the construction of processing maps was attempted using the constitutive creep equations for various high-temperature deformation mechanisms to predict the effect of processing parameters (temperature and strain rate), the material constant and grain size on the power dissipation efficiency and the onset condition for flow instability. The developed processing maps were compared with the processing maps constructed using a conventional method, and the usefulness and limitations of the proposed method are discussed. The power dissipation map was constructed by considering the contributions of the creep mechanisms competing with one another. A flow instability map was constructed by observing that the onset of flow instability occurs near the transition from lattice diffusion controlled dislocation climb creep (or other creep deformation mechanisms) to pipe diffusion controlled dislocation climb creep. Following the proposed approach, processing maps and deformation mechanism maps could be incorporated into single maps in 2D or 3D. |
