Translation Learners’ Perceptions of the Cultural Dimension in the Translation Process: Investigating Algerian Learners' Attitudes and Classroom Learning Practices

Popis: Abstract: Traditionally, translation was restricted to finding equivalents in the target language. However, in its cultural turn, the cultural dimension has gained significance. Ergo, learners' attitudes and their perceptions of culture in translation are determining factors. This study investigates Algerian learners' of translation attitudes towards the target cultures and their perceptions of the cultural dimension in their translation training. To explore the aforementioned aims, a questionnaire was administered to fifty master students from the Institute of Translation at Oran University. To accredit validity and reliability to this study, an interview was conducted with fifteen students for the aim of comparing and crosschecking while interpreting the findings. The obtained data elucidated that learners develop positive attitudes towards the target cultures. Yet, some classroom practices do not promote for culture learning. This study recommends to give culture due attention and behooves translation trainers to gear their practices to promote knowledge about other cultures.
