As one of the world's top 10 multilingual nations, Mexico displays a strong linguistic diversity. Nevertheless, Spanish is the majority language and fulfills all formal social functions. In terms of educational language policies, English is the only institutionalized foreign language, while French, a prestige language, occupies a minor place in Mexican education. Thus, this article presents a biographical exploration of the sociolinguistic trajectories of Mexican French language teachers to better understand the ideologies that led them to pick this line of work. Thus, we analyze their linguistic imaginaries through epilinguistic semi-structured interviews, with the aim of studying the way these teachers value the French language on the linguistic market, which would represent a glottopolitical action facing the linguistic, economic and cultural hegemony of the United States in Mexico. |
