Background: salivary gland tumors are rare lesions. The parotid gland is the most frequent site of these neoplasms, most of which are benign. Objective: to describe clinical and epidemiological variables in patients with malignant neoplasms of the parotid gland treated at the department of otorhinolaryngology of the “Celia Sánchez Manduley” Clinico-Surgical Teaching Hospital of Manzanillo, Granma, from January 2017 through December 2020. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with 21 patients with a histological diagnosis of malignant tumor of the parotid gland, at the aforementioned hospital and during the period herein stated. The following variables were studied: age, sex, diagnosis per year, signs and symptoms, histological classification of the tumor and stage at the time of diagnosis. Results: the 60 to 69 age group (52,4 %) and the male sex (76,2 %) were the most representative. Most of the cases were diagnosed in 2020 and 2017, 7 and 6 respectively. The most frequent signs and symptoms were volume increase (90,5 %), rapid growth (85,7 %), stone consistency and deep plane fixation (80,9 % in both cases) and pain (71,4 %). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (42,9 %) was the most common histological classification. The greatest number of patients was diagnosed at Stage I (47,6 %) and II (33,3 %). Conclusions: the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with malignant neoplasms in the parotid gland were described. |
