Popis: | The encounter of Scipio with the shadows of the heroes of the past in Punica XIII presents, beyond the obvious tribute to Vergil and Homer, many original aspects. The moral scope, with a neat Stoic influence, outweighs the historical and dynastic perspective ; the Greek world and Homeric culture are highly honoured ; Alexandre the Great appears as a privileged model ; feminine virtues are looming large ; the threat of civil war is especially thrown into relief. All these aspects may be related to the moral and intellectual context of Flavian era, so as to suggest that Silius aimed to update the Homeric-Virgilian model in order to endow it with an exemplary value fitting the mental landscape of contemporary Roman aristocracy. |
