This paper investigates synchronous and asynchronous performance of a line start capacitance compensated synchronous reluctance machine. It provides insights into the dynamic and transient behaviour of the compensated synchronous reluctance machine, as well the dynamics of electromagnetic torque development. Three operational scenarios were simulated for both compensated and uncompensated machine. The largest amount of torque was contributed by the interaction of the currents of the two stator windings. The reactive power is (160, 1775) Var, main winding current on no load is (4.93, 0.48) a respectively for (compensated, uncompensated) machine. This revealed the advantages of the compensated machine in terms of improved power factor and torque per ampere.
