The aim of this article is to provide a description of the conditions and process which resulted in the recognition and promotion of industrial architecture in France. From the economic crises of the 1970s and 1980s interest began in the reuse of the vast obsolescent industrial enclaves at risk of demolition. The actions of university professors, architects and associations for the defence of heritage guided an open debate on the practice of tabula rasa. While the initial operations for the reuse of industrial heritage focused exclusively on unique monumental buildings such as the Gare d’Orsay in Paris, the reuse of these locations was progressively incorporated into national policies for sustainable development and redefining territories in crisis. This heritage now enjoys the same recognition as the oldest monumental architectures and is a driving force for the development of tourist routes within France. |
